You awaken to find yourself in a strange place. The floor lurches side to side, and what little light filters in through the tough wooden boards above gives the impression that this space is cramped, a curving oak-planked floor beneath you that bends upwards until it reaches the ceiling, heavy rocks beneath you, pressing harshly into your legs. Your feet are soaked, and there is an acrid scent to the air.
Thunder seems to bellow, but a fraction of a second later this strange room hurls itself violently to the side. You are thrown from your perch against the wooden wall, which cracks and splinters. Forcing the boards aside, you find yourself in an open deck, figures desperately running back and forth, struggling to load heavy iron balls into cannons thrust forth through the portholes. Light spears into the deck from a hole by the slagged remnants of one cannon and its gunners. The boards there are slick and red.
Your gorge rises, threatening to eject what little contents fill your stomach, and you struggle over to a ladder, seeking an escape from the madness. The light above blinds you for a moment, and with a crack the hatch beside you explodes into splinters, the lead musket ball missing your skull by half an inch. You duck back down a moment, then are forced up to the deck by fearful sailors below, desperate to get to the surface. These strange figures burst up past you, some men and women of a familiar kind, others half the size, others thick, muscled and green or grey skinned.
Another crack, but this time from above. Floating above the mizzen mast is a woman, hair tied back in a tail beneath a black tricorne and garbed in a scarlet knee-length coat, who is hurling bolts of lightning at the mast and sailors alike. A crack from the deck and billowing smoke, as a trio of sailors on the swivel guns shoot the lightning-wielder from the sky. In the distance, three more ships are turning for another set of broadsides.
Just as you get your bearings, a great rumbling comes from beneath the ship. Huge, suckered tentacles rise from the waves, wrapping around the length of the vessel and dragging it down. The timbers crack and splinter, the ship sundering, and as the water rushes up to meet you, you catch a glimpse of a vast, baleful eye…
